In the world of modern medicine, a holistic approach is being introduced at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario to help patients who have cancer.
Beginning on Wednesday, February 21st, the Cancer Centre will be rolling out a free eight-week yoga class at the Kingston General Hospital site that is designed specifically for people with cancer.
“We have been hearing interest from patients on what complementary opportunities could be available to them to help them with their cancer treatment,” says Renée Hartzell, Patient Educator for the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario. “Supporting the roll-out of these classes has provided us a great opportunity to act on that feedback and provide our patients another tool for managing their cancer.”
During the class, the instructor will guide attendees through restorative postures along with mindful breathing and meditation techniques. The class will help build strength, improve flexibility, range of motion and promote a sense of well-being. No yoga experience is necessary and the class welcomes all abilities.
“This class is a great opportunity to learn in an environment where you’re sharing space with others who can relate to your experience and understand the journey you’re going through,” says Andrea Pritchard, owner of Into the Flow Yoga and Wellness and instructor for the classes. “Not only will participants gain the positive physical and mental benefits of undergoing yoga practice, but they will also be able to do this with a community of their peers who are uniquely positioned to share and understand this experience with one another.”
As a benefit for those who pursue yoga, it has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety in cancer patients.
“These classes are meant to complement the cancer treatment that patients are undergoing in a safe and comfortable environment,” says Pritchard. “Any patient who is undergoing cancer treatment, regardless of skill level or familiarity with yoga, is encouraged to attend. The class will be tailored to meet everyone’s individual needs.”
Space for the yoga class is limited. To register, or find more information, please contact 1.800.567.5722 extension 7987.
